Pakistan has been elected Chair of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Council of Ministers for 2026–27, marking a significant comeback in regional leadership.
The announcement came during the 29th ECO Council of Ministers meeting, held virtually, where member states overwhelmingly supported Pakistan for the top position. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar represented Pakistan and delivered a confident, forward-looking address. He thanked the member nations for their trust and assured them that Pakistan is prepared to lead the region toward stronger connectivity and cooperation.
In his speech, Dar emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to ECO Vision 2025 and highlighted key priorities for the upcoming term. These include enhancing transport corridors, promoting sustainable development, and pursuing climate-resilient progress across the region.
He called for collective regional action, warning that true integration cannot succeed without peace, stability, and a united stance against terrorism. “Without overcoming these common threats, seamless connectivity will remain out of reach,” Dar noted.
Dar also congratulated Kazakhstan’s new Foreign Minister, Yermek Kosherbayev, for successfully chairing the current session. He expressed excitement for Pakistan’s upcoming role in hosting the Council of Ministers for 2026–27, emphasizing the opportunity to promote transformative regional development.
The election underscores Pakistan’s growing influence within the ECO framework and its commitment to fostering economic growth, regional trade, and cooperation among member states. Pakistan’s chairmanship is expected to strengthen partnerships and create new avenues for collective progress in South and Central Asia.
With this leadership position, Pakistan aims to advance initiatives that enhance regional connectivity, support sustainable projects, and ensure joint efforts to tackle climate and security challenges.
