Sharif, Zardari Unite to Fight Corruption on International Anti-Corruption Day

ISLAMABAD โ€“ Pakistani leaders have vowed to fight corruption and promote transparency across all institutions. Their statements coincide with International Anti-Corruption Day, observed annually on December 9.

President Asif Ali Zardari urged citizens, professionals, and public servants to renew their commitment to honesty. He emphasized that tackling corruption is essential for strengthening national institutions, ensuring economic growth, and earning global respect.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed the call, stating, โ€œAccountability is our top mission!โ€ He assured the public that the government is taking swift and firm action against financial corruption. According to him, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and other authorities are actively pursuing corrupt individuals without bias.

Both leaders highlighted that corruption is a serious threat that undermines societies and weakens economies. They emphasized that combating corruption is critical to safeguarding citizensโ€™ rights and securing Pakistanโ€™s stability.

International Anti-Corruption Day was established by the United Nations in 2003 to promote global awareness about corrupt practices. The UN also encourages countries to enforce the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) to protect institutions and citizens worldwide.

The Pakistani leadershipโ€™s statements signal a renewed focus on accountability and ethical governance. President Zardari encouraged everyone to actively participate in eliminating corrupt practices, while PM Sharif stressed that no individual or organization would be allowed to escape scrutiny.

Observers say these announcements reflect the governmentโ€™s intent to address systemic corruption, strengthen transparency, and restore public trust. By reinforcing anti-corruption measures and promoting civic responsibility, Pakistan aims to improve its economic and social framework in the coming years.
