Pakistan Plans to End Visa-on-Arrival System for Foreign Travelers

Pakistan Plans to End Visa-on-Arrival System for Foreign Travelers

Pakistan is planning major changes to its Visa policy for foreign travelers. The government intends to end the visa-on-arrival and prior-to-arrival approval system. Under the new plan, every Visa application will be processed through Pakistani embassies abroad.

The Ministry of Interior has started a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s visa system. Officials say the changes aim to improve screening and strengthen monitoring of incoming travelers. The move could significantly change how foreigners apply for a Visa to enter Pakistan.

Previously, travelers from certain countries could receive visa-on-arrival or prior-to-arrival authorization. These facilities allowed visitors to get quick entry approval when they arrived in Pakistan. The system was often used by tourists, investors, and business travelers.

However, the government is now expected to abolish these faster entry options. Under the proposed policy, all Visa approvals will be handled by Pakistani embassies and diplomatic missions located in different countries. This shift means travelers will need embassy clearance before entering Pakistan.

The online Visa application portal will continue to operate. Applicants will still submit their information through the digital system. However, the process will work differently under the new policy.

Once a person submits a Visa request online, the application will be forwarded to the Pakistani embassy or diplomatic mission in that country. Embassy officials will then review the request carefully before making a final decision.

Authorities say the Visa will only be issued after a complete evaluation by the embassy. This step is designed to allow detailed background checks and risk assessments. Officials believe this system will improve security and help monitor foreign travel more effectively.

The government believes transferring decision-making authority to embassies will strengthen immigration control. Diplomatic missions will have the responsibility to review applications and verify documents.

Officials also say the new system will help Pakistan maintain stronger oversight of travelers entering the country. While the process may take longer, authorities believe it will improve the overall Visa management system.

Foreign travelers planning to visit Pakistan in the future may need to apply earlier. The changes are expected to make the Visa approval process more structured and carefully monitored.
