The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has finalized plans for the auction of 5G Spectrum, marking a significant step for mobile connectivity in the country.
Following the auction, 5G services will be initially rolled out in major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. The PTA said this rollout will also enhance existing 4G services, improving internet speed and coverage nationwide.
The authority has prepared 600 MHz of spectrum for the auction. To ensure full transparency, the entire process will be broadcast live. A specialized software system will be used to maintain the integrity of the bidding, and testing has already been completed in the presence of major telecom companies.
PTA also announced a major policy change, slashing the “Right of Way” rate from Rs36,000 to zero. Operators must purchase a minimum of 100 MHz during the auction. Officials emphasized that these measures aim to improve overall service quality for consumers.
In a related move, the PTA approved a new Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) Policy Framework. This policy allows companies to offer mobile services without owning physical network infrastructure. Instead, MVNOs will use existing networks of licensed operators while selling services under their own brands.
The introduction of MVNOs is expected to increase competition, provide consumers with more choices, and offer new and customized mobile packages. The Federal Cabinet approved the policy, and the PTA has issued the formal framework.
Under the policy, an MVNO is defined as a mobile service provider without radio towers, spectrum, or core network infrastructure. Companies applying for an MVNO license must be incorporated in Pakistan and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).
Analysts say the 5G Spectrum auction, combined with the MVNO policy, could transform Pakistan’s telecom sector. Faster internet, more service options, and competitive pricing are expected to benefit users nationwide.
The PTA continues to work on finalizing auction details and ensuring that operators comply with all regulatory requirements. This step is seen as crucial for expanding high-speed connectivity and strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.
