Pakistan has achieved a major milestone in healthcare with its First International Telerobotic Surgery. The procedure was successfully performed at Lyari General Hospital in Karachi, marking a historic moment for the country’s medical sector.
Surgeons from Kuwait conducted the operation remotely, performing gynecological surgery on a patient in Karachi. The distance between the two locations was nearly 1,600 kilometres, making it the first time such a procedure has been carried out in Pakistan. High-speed internet enabled the doctors to control robotic instruments with only a 30-microsecond delay, ensuring precision and safety during the operation.
Officials stated that this successful surgery demonstrates Pakistan’s ability to use advanced medical technology to connect patients with expert surgeons anywhere in the world. The achievement opens new possibilities for remote treatment and complex operations across the country.
Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho spoke at a ceremony at Lyari General Hospital. She highlighted the opening of several new medical facilities, including a modern mortuary, forensic unit, and laboratories for microbiology, pathology, and biochemistry. A special training lab was also inaugurated, allowing medical students to practice with new technology.
Doctors involved in the operation emphasized that the First International Telerobotic Surgery proves the technology works effectively. They said it can be applied to various surgeries, including tumour removal, kidney procedures, and gastrointestinal operations. The success of this procedure sets a precedent for more advanced medical interventions in Pakistan.
The Sindh government plans to expand the use of telerobotic surgery to other government hospitals. In the future, Pakistani doctors may also perform remote surgeries for patients in other countries, further enhancing the country’s medical capabilities.
Experts believe this achievement is a significant step forward for Pakistan’s healthcare system. The First International Telerobotic Surgery reflects the growing adoption of cutting-edge medical technology in the region and promises improved access to specialist care.
