Park Road Underpass in Islamabad Expected to Open by July 30

ISLAMABAD: The long-awaited Underpass on Park Road in Islamabad is expected to open for traffic by July 30, 2026. The project is being developed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to ease traffic congestion in the city.

The Underpass is part of a larger road development plan aimed at improving travel in Zone-IV. It will mainly benefit residents of DHA Margalla Enclave, Park View City, and Bahria Enclave.

Construction work on the Underpass began earlier this year. Initial site preparation and traffic diversions started in late January, while regular construction officially began in March 2026.

According to updates shared with the Senate, the main Underpass structure is on track for completion by the end of July. The surrounding infrastructure work is expected to finish by August 2026.

While the project promises long-term relief, it has caused serious traffic problems during construction. Park Road has become one of the busiest and most difficult routes for daily commuters.

Motorists using the road have been advised to expect an extra 20 to 30 minutes of travel time. The road is an important route for people living in Chak Shahzad, Shahzad Town, Park Enclave, and nearby areas.

It also handles traffic for schools, universities, offices, and commercial centers. This has increased the pressure on the already crowded route.

Many residents have complained about poor traffic management around the Underpass construction site. Temporary diversion routes have been described as narrow and rough. Drivers say the roads are dusty and uneven.

Commuters also reported weak lane markings and poor traffic signs. Some said there is little traffic control at key points.

The situation becomes worse after rain. Water, mud, and construction material often collect on the temporary roads. This creates more delays and safety risks.

Vehicle owners have also raised concerns over damage caused by rough surfaces. Motorcyclists, in particular, face dangerous conditions due to dust and broken roads.

The Underpass is part of a wider Rs10 billion Park Road development project. This includes service roads, overhead works, and road improvements.

Once completed, the Underpass is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce daily travel delays for thousands of commuters.
