PESHAWAR: Students of a school in Peshawar have shared disturbing details about a deadly roof collapse. They revealed that rainwater frequently leaked through the roof whenever it rained.

Speaking to ARY News, several students said the roof had shown signs of leakage during rainfall. Their accounts have raised questions about the building’s condition before the tragic incident.

One student recalled that she had gone to get a pen when the roof suddenly collapsed. She said Miss Samreen, who was present in the nursery classroom, lost her life in the incident.

The tragedy has claimed 35 lives, while dozens of injured people remain under treatment at hospitals. Several victims are reportedly in critical condition.

The incident has raised serious concerns about school building safety and the inspection of educational institutions in Peshawar.

Arrested School Owner Calls Incident a Natural Disaster

Khan Muhammad, the arrested owner of the school, described the incident as a natural disaster. He attributed the roof collapse to rainfall and denied allegations of poor construction.

According to Khan Muhammad, the school building was relatively new. He claimed it had been constructed only one and a half years ago.

He also said the building had undergone surveys and inspections before the incident. The school owner denied using substandard construction materials during the building’s construction.

Khan Muhammad further stated that his own children were also studying at the school. His remarks came after the incident triggered concerns about the building’s safety and maintenance.

However, the students’ accounts about recurring roof leaks have drawn attention to the school’s condition before the collapse.

Private School Association Questions Regulatory Oversight

Inamullah Khan, a leader of the Private School Association, also commented on the incident. He said the affected school was registered with the association.

However, he clarified that the association’s role was limited to providing membership. According to him, the responsibility for monitoring schools rests with the Private Schools Regulatory Authority.

He said the association was unaware of any problems with the school’s building. Inamullah Khan held the school principal and the regulatory authority responsible for the incident.

He also alleged that the authority had failed to conduct proper inspections. His statements have raised questions about the effectiveness of existing monitoring procedures.

Questions Raised Over School Building Safety

The deadly roof collapse has renewed concerns about the safety standards followed by educational institutions. The students’ statements about leaking rainwater have added to calls for closer scrutiny of school buildings.

Inamullah Khan also claimed that permission to construct a three-storey school building was not allowed in the area where the school was located.

The allegations have highlighted concerns about building approvals, construction standards, and regulatory checks. Authorities face questions about whether the school met the required safety standards.

The incident has also drawn attention to the need for regular inspections of educational facilities. Proper maintenance and timely repairs are essential to protect students and school staff.

As investigations continue, the circumstances surrounding the Peshawar school roof collapse remain a major concern. The tragedy has highlighted the importance of ensuring safe learning environments for children.
