ISLAMABAD: The newly appointed Executive Director of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Professor Dr. Tanveer Khaliq, has announced major reforms at the hospital.
According to ARY News, the reforms aim to modernise hospital facilities, improve medical services, and expand educational opportunities. Hospital spokesperson Sajid Abbasi shared details of the initiatives.
The new measures focus on improving medicine supplies, upgrading medical equipment, and strengthening procurement systems. The hospital is also expanding specialised postgraduate training programmes for medical professionals.
PIMS Upgrades Medicine Supply and Procurement Systems
The hospital administration has introduced changes to improve the supply of medicines to patients. These measures aim to ensure that essential medicines remain available without unnecessary interruptions.
According to the spokesperson, procurement procedures have also been upgraded for inpatient departments and outpatient departments (OPDs).
The changes are intended to improve the purchasing and distribution of medical supplies. Better procurement systems can help hospital departments manage their requirements more effectively.
The administration is also working to improve the hospital’s overall infrastructure. These measures form part of the broader reform plan introduced under the new Executive Director.
Old Medical Equipment Being Replaced
PIMS has started replacing outdated electromedical equipment across several departments. The replacement process will take place in phases.
The departments included in the initiative are General Surgery, Medicine, and the Dialysis Unit. The upgrades aim to improve the availability of medical equipment for patient care.
Modern medical equipment plays an important role in diagnosis and treatment. Replacing older machines can also help departments maintain their clinical services.
The phased approach will allow the hospital to address equipment needs across different departments. However, the administration has not announced a complete timeline for the replacement programme.
New Master’s Programmes in Surgical Specialties
PIMS has also introduced specialised master’s degree programmes in several surgical fields. These programmes have been launched in affiliation with a university.
The new academic programmes cover breast surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, and minimal-access surgery. They are intended to expand specialised training opportunities for medical professionals.
Breast surgery focuses on surgical treatment involving breast conditions. Hepatobiliary surgery deals with diseases affecting the liver and related organs.
Minimal-access surgery involves procedures performed through small incisions or specialised instruments. Such techniques are used in various surgical treatments.
The new programmes will broaden the institution’s postgraduate medical education offerings. They also aim to support the development of specialised surgical expertise.
PIMS Plans Dedicated Thoracic Surgery Department
The hospital is also preparing to establish a separate Department of Thoracic Surgery. The spokesperson said formal planning for the department was underway.
Thoracic surgery involves surgical treatment of conditions affecting the chest. These may include diseases involving the lungs and other structures within the chest.
The proposed department would expand the hospital’s specialised surgical services. However, officials have not announced a specific launch date.
New Policy for House Officer Selection
In another administrative change, PIMS has introduced a new policy for selecting house officers. The policy aims to ensure a transparent selection process.
House officers are medical graduates who undertake supervised clinical training. This training helps them gain practical experience in hospital departments.
The new policy is intended to make the selection process more transparent. Further details about the policy’s implementation have not been provided.
Overall, the reforms cover hospital infrastructure, medicine supplies, medical equipment, and postgraduate education. The initiatives also include plans to expand specialised surgical services and improve recruitment procedures.
