The government of Pakistan has announced plans to distribute 500,000 refurbished Chromebooks to talented students across the country. The initiative will operate under the Prime Minister’s Youth Chromebooks Scheme and aims to improve access to digital education.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the scheme in Islamabad on October 25, 2026. The government plans to distribute the devices over the next two years. The initiative will help students access online educational resources and improve their digital skills.
Who Can Apply for the PM Chromebook Scheme?
Students who secured at least 50 percent marks in their latest Secondary School Certificate Part-I (Grade 9) examinations can qualify. The selection process will follow a merit-based system.
The Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) will verify students’ examination results. Selection will consider merit within each province or region, educational board, and academic stream.
Students from public schools, eligible private schools, provincial educational foundations, and registered madaris can apply. The scheme aims to support students from different educational backgrounds.
Province-Wise Chromebook Distribution Quota
The government has allocated specific quotas for provinces and regions. Punjab will receive 181,090 Chromebooks, while Sindh has been allocated 85,925 devices.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will receive 51,170 Chromebooks, and Balochistan will receive 31,815. Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) has been allocated 100,000 devices.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) will each receive 25,000 Chromebooks. These allocations will guide the distribution process across the country.
Under the scheme, 80 percent of each regional allocation is reserved for school students. The remaining 20 percent is allocated to students studying in registered madaris.
The distribution will also consider students’ academic streams. Science students will receive 70 percent of the allocated share, while arts students will receive 30 percent.
Students to Receive Internet Devices and Backpacks
The PM Chromebook Scheme will provide more than just computers. Each selected student will also receive a backpack and a MiFi internet device.
These additional items will help students access online learning materials from home. They will also support access to digital libraries and other educational resources.
The initiative aims to reduce the digital divide between students with reliable internet access and those with limited resources. It also seeks to make digital learning more accessible to talented students nationwide.
How Will the Selection and Delivery Process Work?
Schools will verify students’ marksheets, current enrolment, and school affiliation before delivery. The Chromebooks will then be sent through courier services.
A tracking system will help students monitor their deliveries. Complaint committees will also address concerns about selection, document verification, and devices that are not delivered as promised.
The verification process aims to ensure that eligible students receive their devices. It will also help maintain transparency throughout the distribution process.
How to Apply for the PM Chromebook Scheme
Eligible students can visit the official IBCC application portal at pmychromebooks.ibcc.edu.pk. They can check their records and submit the required information once their examination results become available.
Applicants may need to upload a recent photograph, marksheet, and copies of their B-Form or CNIC. Students should ensure that their information matches their educational records.
Applicants should also check their eligibility and application status through the official portal. They should follow any additional instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
Shehbaz Sharif Highlights Equal Access to Digital Education
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the devices would be distributed strictly on merit. He stressed that talented students should not lose educational opportunities because of financial difficulties.
He also recalled that previous PML-N governments had distributed 600,000 laptops over the past decade. The new initiative aims to expand access to technology through the distribution of 500,000 Chromebooks.
According to the prime minister, internet connectivity provided through the scheme could benefit around 2.5 million people. The broader goal is to connect students who lack digital access with online learning and economic opportunities.
