PM Kakar Promises Strong Action Against Electricity Thieves

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has emphasized the government’s commitment to cracking down on electricity theft during a detailed briefing on the power sector in Islamabad.

The briefing covered various aspects of electricity generation, including potential, installed capacity, actual generation, and distribution. Kakar directed the prioritization of renewable and hydel sources in future power generation projects and emphasized the need to reduce distribution company losses.

The prime minister also called for the implementation of the transformer metering project and immediate action against electricity dues defaulters in collaboration with provinces and law enforcement agencies. He stressed that no exceptions should be made in dealing with defaulters and thieves of electricity.

Kakar highlighted the importance of small hydel projects in generating low-cost electricity and mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change. He advocated for the use of local coal in coal power projects and urged the initiation of 2,400 MW solar power projects with transparency in the process. Additionally, the government is committed to reducing the circular debt of the power sector through various measures.
