The United States has approved a major weapons package worth nearly $2 billion for Saudi Arabia. The sale aims to strengthen the kingdomโs air defense capabilities as security concerns continue to grow across the Middle East.
The US State Department announced that the proposed deal is valued at approximately $1.96 billion. Officials said the package will help Saudi Arabia improve its ability to respond to current and future security threats.
According to the State Department, the $2 billion arms sale supports US foreign policy and national security objectives. It also strengthens the defense of Saudi Arabia, which the United States considers a major non-NATO ally in the Gulf region.
The department said improving Saudi Arabiaโs defense capabilities will contribute to political stability and economic security in the region. It added that stronger defense cooperation will also improve coordination between Saudi, US, and other allied forces.
The proposed deal includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) and related warheads. These guided weapons are designed to strike targets accurately while reducing unintended damage during military operations.
The US Navy describes the APKWS as a cost-effective precision weapon. It is intended to destroy military targets while limiting collateral damage in close combat situations.
The State Department confirmed that BAE Systems, based in Nashua, New Jersey, will serve as the principal contractor for the project. The company will be responsible for supplying the approved defense equipment.
The approval comes during a period of rising tensions across the Middle East. Regional security has become increasingly uncertain due to ongoing military developments involving Iran and its allies.
Saudi Arabia is also facing renewed threats from Yemenโs Iran-backed Houthi movement. Earlier this week, the Houthis launched missiles targeting an airport in the southern Saudi city of Abha.
The missile attack followed an earlier strike on Sanaa airport by Yemenโs internationally recognized government. According to reports, the operation was intended to divert a flight carrying a Houthi delegation returning from Iran. The Houthis later accused Saudi Arabia of being responsible for that attack.
At the same time, the United States has increased military pressure on Iran. Washington has resumed stronger military operations and reimposed a naval blockade as tensions between the two countries continue to rise.
US officials said the proposed $2 billion weapons package will not affect the readiness of American armed forces. The State Department emphasized that the sale is intended to improve Saudi Arabiaโs homeland defense without reducing US military capabilities.
