PM Shehbaz Launches Major Development Projects in Gilgit-Baltistan

PM Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday launched several major development initiatives in Gilgit-Baltistan aimed at improving education, energy, security, and youth support across the region.

During a ceremony held in Gilgit, PM Shehbaz inaugurated a 100 megawatt solar power project. The initiative is part of the governmentโ€™s broader renewable energy strategy for Gilgit-Baltistan. Officials said the project will help reduce electricity shortages, especially during the winter season.

PM Shehbaz also launched the distribution of free solar panels for domestic and commercial consumers. According to officials, the project includes 58 megawatts worth of solar systems. The distribution process was conducted through a digital balloting system to ensure transparency.

Authorities stated that more than 50,000 applications were received for the scheme. Around 15,000 applicants were selected purely on merit. Beneficiaries will receive solar panels to help reduce energy costs and improve electricity access.

While addressing the gathering, PM Shehbaz directed concerned departments to complete the 100MW solar project by mid-2027. He emphasized the importance of sustainable energy projects for remote and mountainous areas.

The prime minister also announced major educational projects in the region. He laid the foundation stones for four Daanish Schools in Sultanabad, Bunji, Ghanche, and Skardu.

Officials said these schools will offer modern educational facilities. The institutions will include smart classrooms, e-libraries, boarding arrangements, and free meals for students. Free education facilities for girls were also announced under the initiative.

PM Shehbaz said the government is focused on providing equal educational opportunities to children in underdeveloped areas. He added that modern schools can help improve literacy and future employment opportunities for youth.

In addition, the prime minister inaugurated Phase II of the Gilgit Safe City Project. He also announced the launch of the Skardu Safe City project to strengthen security and surveillance systems.

Authorities were directed to ensure international-level security standards in both projects. Officials believe these systems will improve public safety and law enforcement operations in the region.
