PM Shehbaz Reaffirms Pakistan’s Strong Partnership with the US for Regional Stability

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to maintaining a strong partnership with the United States in efforts to promote regional peace and stability. In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister thanked US President Donald Trump for recognizing Pakistan’s crucial role in the fight against terrorism, particularly in Afghanistan.

PM Shehbaz highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to counter-terrorism, emphasizing the sacrifices made by over 80,000 soldiers and civilians in the battle against extremism. He noted that Pakistan has consistently worked to deprive terrorist organizations of safe havens, ensuring they cannot operate against any country. He further assured that Pakistan will continue to collaborate closely with the US to foster peace and eliminate terrorism in the region.

In a related announcement, President Trump praised Pakistan’s cooperation in the recent arrest of Shareefullah, a top-tier commander of ISKP involved in the deadly 2021 Kabul airport bombing. The bombing claimed the lives of 13 American service members and around 170 Afghan civilians during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Speaking before a joint session of Congress, President Trump expressed his gratitude towards Pakistan for its assistance in the operation. “This was a very momentous day for the 13 families whose children were murdered on that fateful day,” Trump said, referring to the Abbey Gate bombing. He also took the opportunity to criticize the handling of the US withdrawal, calling it “perhaps the most embarrassing moment in the history of our country.”

The arrest comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen the US-Pakistan counter-terrorism partnership. Recently, the Trump administration approved $397 million in funding for the maintenance of Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jet fleet, reversing an earlier freeze on foreign aid. This funding will be dedicated to counter-terrorism operations, with strict US oversight to ensure its proper use.
