On August 5, media reports indicated that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country amid severe violence, one of the worst since the nation’s independence.

The Bangladesh Army Chief, Wakar uz Zaman, announced that the Army would handle the country’s affairs and work with political parties to establish an interim government.

He urged an end to violence and promised to address the public’s demands. Sheikh Hasina and her sister have reportedly moved to a safer location, and she was unable to record a farewell speech.
