PM Shehbaz Sharif Forms Task Force to Reform Power Sector

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has established an eight-member task force to implement structural reforms in the power sector. The task force, led by Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Khan Leghari and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Power Muhammad Ali, aims to alleviate the financial strain on the sector and create an efficient, competitive power market.

The task force includes representatives from various organizations and will focus on making the power sector financially sustainable, designing an efficient market, utilizing excess capacity, and addressing capacity payments and regulatory issues. It will also oversee the implementation of its recommendations and be supported by the government with necessary resources.

In addition, the federal government has announced the privatization of 13 power distribution companies (DISCOs) in phases. The first phase will involve privatizing FESCO, GEPCO, HESCO, and IESCO, followed by MEPCO, PESCO, and others. This phased privatization is intended to attract private investment and improve the sector’s efficiency.
