Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved negotiations between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), signaling a possible opening for political Dialogue. According to official sources, the prime minister has authorized National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to lead the talks. The government delegation is prepared to participate whenever the Speaker calls for discussions.
Sources within the government clarified that the talks will only involve PTI’s elected representatives. They stressed that no meetings will be held with non-elected individuals. This condition has been set to ensure that the Dialogue remains within the constitutional and parliamentary framework.
Meanwhile, sources from the Speaker’s office said that no PTI leader has formally contacted them so far. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has kept the parliamentary committee intact. He has also conveyed that if the opposition shows readiness, he will immediately convene a meeting. Parliamentary sources added that despite repeated offers, the opposition has not yet reached out.
The Speaker has invited PTI leaders to visit his chamber for discussions. Officials noted that the last meeting between PTI and the Speaker took place for the appointment of Mahmood Achakzai as opposition leader. Since then, no formal request for talks has been made by the party.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, Senator Rana Sanaullah Khan, has reiterated the government’s willingness for political Dialogue. Speaking on a private television program, he said the government is fully prepared to engage the opposition to strengthen democracy. He added that negotiations between political parties are their own responsibility.
Senator Rana Sanaullah also referred to statements by the DG ISPR. He said the military has clarified that holding political talks is not its mandate. According to him, such matters must be resolved through political channels and parliamentary engagement.
He further stated that it is now PTI’s decision whether it wants to enter Dialogue or not. He claimed that the PTI founder has expressed no interest in negotiations. Instead, he allegedly prefers launching a street movement.
Rana Sanaullah criticized PTI’s plans for protests and strikes. He said such actions would not succeed and would be rejected by the public. He also claimed that PTI’s strategy risks creating disorder rather than stability.
