PML-N Govt Delaying Notification For Chief of Defence Forces Appointment

The appointment of Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) under the 27th Constitutional Amendment remains pending, with reports suggesting that the PML-N Govt delaying notification is fueling speculation across political and military circles. The new post is expected to redefine the balance of power within Pakistan’s military structure.

Prime Minister’s aide on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, stated that the notification for the CDF will be issued at the appropriate time. “It will not be rushed and will follow the hierarchy of the Constitution, law, and framed rules,” he said. Sanaullah emphasized that careful evaluation of several options is ongoing before finalizing the decision.

The PML-N Govt delaying notification has prompted questions about government efficiency and constitutional procedures. The delay comes after General Sahir Shamshad Mirza resigned as CJCSC on November 27, paving the way for the new CDF post. Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s tenure ended on November 29, making the notification crucial to formalize leadership.

Under the new framework, Gen Asim Munir is expected to assume the CDF role, which would extend his tenure. While legal experts debate whether a fresh notification is legally required, a 2024 amendment to the Pakistan Army Act may render it unnecessary. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed that the process has begun and will be finalized by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sanaullah also dismissed rumors implicating former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, stating that he never attempted to block the notification. “Claims against him are baseless,” Sanaullah said, clarifying the difference between matters under consideration and finalized decisions.

Observers suggest that bureaucratic inefficiency or political maneuvering may explain why the PML-N Govt delaying notification has caused uncertainty over the new CDF appointment. Once issued, the notification will officially begin the CDF’s five-year tenure, marking a significant moment in Pakistan’s military and political landscape.
