ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) parliamentary party has decided to seek National Assembly approval for imposing an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
According to ARY News, the decision was made during a meeting of the PML-N parliamentary party in Islamabad. The National Assembly is scheduled to consider a resolution supporting the emergency on Wednesday.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah shared details with the media. He said the government believed action was necessary to address the situation in the province.
Sanaullah stated that the government needed to demonstrate better performance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He described the decision as a result of the prevailing circumstances. He also expressed confidence that the situation would improve and terrorism would be eliminated.
Rana Sanaullah Calls for Strong Action Against Terrorism
Rana Sanaullah said defeating terrorism was essential and should be achieved at all costs. He maintained that the country had no alternative to overcoming the security threat.
He also criticised the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government over its role in counterterrorism efforts. According to Sanaullah, the provincial administration had not provided full cooperation in addressing terrorism.
He alleged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government had focused on activities other than tackling the security challenge. However, these statements reflected Sanaullah’s position on the issue.
The adviser praised the Balochistan government for its cooperation in counterterrorism operations. He said the provincial government was supporting efforts to address the threat.
PML-N Adviser Comments on Militant Demands
Sanaullah also discussed demands made by militant groups. He said some groups were calling for the separation of Balochistan from Pakistan.
He questioned the possibility of negotiations with groups advocating the country’s division. According to him, such demands raised serious concerns about Pakistan’s territorial integrity.
The adviser also alleged similarities between the PTI’s political narrative and the positions taken by terrorist groups. He argued that militant organisations were not presenting conventional political demands.
Sanaullah said these groups were acting against Pakistan’s unity and national interests. His remarks came amid ongoing concerns about terrorism and security in the country.
Regional Countries’ Efforts to Address the Situation
Sanaullah said Saudi Arabia, China, Turkiye, and Qatar had made efforts to help resolve the issue. However, he claimed the Afghan government had not accepted their proposals.
He also referred to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and elements described as Fitna al-Khawarij. He identified them as groups involved in terrorist activities.
According to Sanaullah, several criminal activities were also contributing to the spread of terrorism. These included extortion, the use of non-custom-paid vehicles, and drug trafficking.
He said these activities presented additional challenges for law enforcement agencies. Addressing them would require efforts against both terrorism and related criminal networks.
National Assembly to Consider the Emergency Resolution
The proposed resolution is expected to bring the issue before the National Assembly for consideration. The PML-N parliamentary party has agreed to pursue parliamentary approval for the proposed emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The development comes amid continuing debate over security conditions in the province. Counterterrorism cooperation between federal and provincial authorities remains a central issue in the discussion.
