Gilgit-Baltistan has officially launched the digital lottery to select beneficiaries for the Prime Minister’s Free Solar Scheme.
The launch ceremony was inaugurated by caretaker Chief Minister Justice (R) Yar Muhammad. Officials emphasized that the Solar Scheme is designed to promote alternative energy, reduce electricity shortages, and provide environmentally friendly power solutions.
GB Additional Chief Secretary Mushtaq Ahmed said the Solar Scheme will ensure fair distribution of solar systems to eligible households and businesses. He added that the initiative will also support the region’s economic and social development, helping communities grow sustainably while addressing energy needs.
The Solar Scheme will provide a total of 58 megawatts (MW) of solar energy in Gilgit-Baltistan. Of this, 40 MW is reserved for residential households, while 18 MW will be allocated to small businesses and IT enterprises. Officials noted that this allocation will particularly benefit the IT sector and small businesses by providing reliable energy and opportunities for growth.
Provincial ministers praised the Solar Scheme, calling it a major step toward solving the electricity crisis in the region. They highlighted its potential to support both social welfare and economic development.
The digital lottery system aims to ensure transparency, allowing eligible residents to participate easily and fairly. Beneficiaries will receive solar systems that can reduce dependence on traditional electricity sources, lowering costs for households and businesses alike.
Officials also stressed that the Solar Scheme aligns with national goals for renewable energy and sustainable development. It demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing alternative power solutions and improving living standards in remote areas like Gilgit-Baltistan.
The scheme is expected to positively impact thousands of residents and entrepreneurs, offering a reliable energy source while promoting green energy adoption in the region.
