A new innovation in healthcare could change how tuberculosis is diagnosed worldwide. The development of a Portable Device may help make testing faster, cheaper, and more accessible.

Researchers say the Portable Device can detect tuberculosis using a simple tongue swab. The result is available within 30 minutes. The cost of each test is around $4, which is approximately Rs. 1,100.

The World Health Organization (WHO) approved the testing method in March. It is the first molecular TB test recommended for use outside full laboratory settings.

The Portable Device is designed for use in small clinics and remote health centers. It is especially useful in areas with limited medical infrastructure.

The system, known as MiniDock MTB, costs under $400 in total. It can run on a power bank or standard electricity supply. It also requires minimal training for healthcare workers.

The testing process is simple and quick. A healthcare worker collects a tongue swab or phlegm sample. The sample is then placed into the device for analysis.

The Portable Device detects tuberculosis by identifying bacterial DNA. Results are usually available in 12 to 25 minutes, making diagnosis much faster than traditional methods.

Experts say the innovation could help millions of people. Tuberculosis remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally. Many cases still go undiagnosed each year.

Traditional testing methods rely on phlegm samples. However, many patients struggle to produce them. This includes children, elderly patients, and people living with HIV.

The older method also misses a significant number of infections. The Portable Device aims to close this gap by offering an easier alternative.

In a study involving 1,380 participants, the device showed strong results. It detected TB in 86 percent of positive phlegm samples. It also identified 80 percent of positive tongue swab cases.

Researchers say the performance meets WHO accuracy standards. However, the device is still being improved for wider use.

Despite its benefits, the Portable Device has some limitations. It cannot yet detect drug-resistant TB strains. Its accuracy also drops in early-stage infections with low bacterial levels.

Even with these challenges, experts believe it is a major step forward. The Portable Device could play a key role in expanding TB testing in underserved regions.

Scientists are also working on future diagnostic tools. These include tests based on blood markers and proteins. But for now, this portable innovation offers a practical solution for faster diagnosis.
