The Power Division has confirmed that a shortage of LNG is limiting electricity generation in the country. Power plants with a combined capacity of around 5,000 megawatts are currently unable to operate at full capacity. This has added pressure on the national grid and contributed to electricity loadshedding in several regions.
Officials said that once LNG supply improves, the situation is expected to stabilize. They also noted that increased water discharge from dams will help boost hydropower generation. Together, these factors may reduce nighttime power shortages.
During peak hours on April 27, the Power Division reported changes in electricity supply patterns. Higher water release from Tarbela Dam increased hydropower output to 6,000 megawatts. The countryโs total hydropower capacity stands at 11,500 megawatts.
Due to this increase, the intensity of electricity loadshedding was reduced in some areas. However, demand still remained high in many parts of the country.
The spokesperson added that local gas supplies also helped improve generation. Around 100 megawatts were added to the national grid without difficulty. Additionally, 500 megawatts were transmitted from southern regions to support the system.
Despite these improvements, electricity distribution companies still carried out controlled load management. In most areas, electricity loadshedding lasted between one to two hours during peak night demand.
Officials explained that better hydropower generation helped limit extended outages. Without this increase, the duration of electricity loadshedding could have been longer.
In regions with higher transmission losses, economic load management is being applied. Authorities clarified that this policy is separate from peak-hour load shedding and does not directly impact routine supply management.
The Power Division stated that efforts are ongoing to balance demand and supply. Improving fuel availability and increasing hydropower output are key steps in reducing future pressure on the grid.
For now, electricity loadshedding remains linked to fuel shortages and high demand. However, officials are hopeful that better resource availability will gradually improve the situation across the country.
