Unannounced Loadshedding Increases Across Punjab Amid Power Shortfall

Unannounced electricity loadshedding has increased across Punjab, including Lahore. The situation is worsening as the national power shortage continues. Residents in several cities are facing longer and more frequent outages. The rising demand has added pressure on the already strained system.

Officials report that the country is facing an electricity shortfall of more than 3,500 MW. The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) alone is dealing with a deficit above 1,000 MW. This gap between demand and supply has led to widespread loadshedding in urban and rural areas.

The shortage is mainly linked to limited supply from RLNG, hydro, and oil-based power plants. These constraints have reduced overall generation capacity. As a result, unplanned loadshedding has become more frequent and unpredictable for consumers.

In many areas, residents are experiencing outages of up to six hours. Earlier, scheduled cuts were usually around two hours. However, the duration has now increased significantly. Authorities expect the situation to continue for several days if supply issues remain unresolved.

Public concern is also growing over the impact on daily life and businesses. A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court by the Judicial Activism Panel. The petition challenges the ongoing unannounced loadshedding and calls for a fair electricity supply system.

It argues that citizens are paying high electricity bills but still facing random outages. The petition requests the court to ensure transparent and uninterrupted power distribution. This legal move highlights rising frustration among consumers.

Meanwhile, the Power Division has announced updates on electricity management and pricing. Officials claim some relief has been provided to consumers. However, they also warn of increased pressure during peak hours.

To manage demand, authorities have introduced a daily load management plan. Around 2.25 hours of controlled loadshedding will be implemented between 5 PM and 1 AM. This period is considered the peak usage window.

Officials say this step will help reduce fuel costs and prevent further tariff increases. Without such measures, electricity prices could have risen sharply. Despite these efforts, public concern over loadshedding continues to grow across Punjab.
