The Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) has announced a major policy change, declaring that academic marks will no longer carry any weightage in recruitment exams starting January 1, 2026.
According to the notification, the PPSC will now assess candidates solely on their performance in written tests and interviews, ensuring a more transparent and merit-based selection process. The decision aims to eliminate inconsistencies in academic evaluation systems across different educational boards and universities.
Officials said the reform is intended to create a level playing field for all applicants. Under the current system, candidates with higher academic scores had an advantage regardless of their performance in competitive exams. With the new rules, equal opportunity will be given to every candidate based on their actual test results.
The PPSC stated that the updated recruitment policy aligns with the governmentβs broader goal of standardizing public sector hiring and promoting fairness in job allocation. The commission emphasized that written tests and interviews will now serve as the only decisive criteria for final selection.
This change is expected to particularly benefit candidates from less privileged educational backgrounds, who often faced disadvantages due to grading disparities.
Public reaction to the announcement has been largely positive, with many calling it a progressive and merit-driven step. Education experts have also supported the move, saying it could reduce favoritism and enhance transparency in Punjabβs recruitment system.
The PPSC clarified that the new rule will apply to all future exams and recruitments conducted after January 1, 2026, while ongoing processes will continue under existing regulations.
