The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning about scammers mimicking government organizations. The authority released an awareness video advising citizens to stay alert.
The PTA stated that fraudsters are scammers mimicking its name, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and banks. These criminals try to deceive people into sharing personal information.
Officials emphasized that no government agency will ever ask for your OTP, PIN, identity card number, or biometrics. Citizens should only verify information through official government channels.
The PTA urged consumers to use SIM cards responsibly. Using a SIM registered in someone elseโs name is against the law. The registered user will be held accountable for all calls, messages, and data usage on the SIM.
โRegistered consumers will be fixed responsible for their SIM usage,โ the PTA stated. Citizens are advised to ensure their mobile connections are properly registered under their names.
The alert comes amid efforts to improve Pakistanโs telecom sector. On January 7, the PTA approved a new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) policy framework. This policy allows new companies to offer mobile services without building their own networks.
Under the framework, MVNOs will operate using existing mobile networks but under their own brand names. The move is expected to increase competition and give consumers more options.
MVNOs must be incorporated in Pakistan and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. They are responsible for service quality, billing, and customer complaints. They cannot start services until the PTA issues a commencement certificate.
The PTA warned that scammers mimicking government agencies could exploit the growing telecom market. Citizens must remain vigilant while adopting new mobile services.
Authorities advised consumers to report suspicious messages or calls immediately. The PTA continues to educate the public on safe mobile use and responsible SIM registration.
The awareness campaign highlights both the potential benefits of the MVNO framework and the need for caution against fraudulent activities.
