ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a stern warning to individuals sharing illegal content on social media platforms.
A PTA spokesperson emphasized that while digital platforms provide freedom of expression, using them to promote illegal content or engage in unlawful activities is strictly prohibited.
The PTA highlighted that content involving religious desecration, disrespect toward Prophethood or sacred personalities, incitement against individuals or institutions, hateful propaganda, obscene material, and fake news is considered a criminal offence under the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.
The authority urged social media users to remain vigilant and avoid sharing illegal content that could harm public order or incite violence. Citizens are encouraged to report such content through the PTA CMS mobile application, helping maintain safety and lawfulness online.
Officials stated that reporting harmful material is in the public interest and essential for preserving peace across digital platforms. The PTA also reminded users that repeated violations could lead to legal consequences, including fines and imprisonment, as per PECA regulations.
In addition to content warnings, the PTA reiterated that all SIM cards must be registered in the userโs own name. The authority stressed that using SIMs registered under another personโs name violates telecommunications regulations and may result in penalties.
The PTA continues to monitor online activities and warns that enforcement measures will target those involved in distributing or promoting illegal content. Citizens are urged to adopt responsible digital practices and report suspicious content promptly.
This move aligns with Pakistanโs ongoing efforts to regulate digital platforms, curb misinformation, and ensure that social media remains a safe space for users. Authorities hope these measures will foster accountability while balancing freedom of expression with national security and public order.
