In a major step toward safeguarding children’s rights, the Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has approved the province’s first-ever comprehensive Child Protection Policy.
The policy, crafted by the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau, offers a strategic framework to combat child abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation. It was formally endorsed during a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, underscoring her administration’s prioritization of child welfare.

Chairperson Sarah Ahmad highlighted that the groundwork began over a year ago with the development of a case management system, while the draft policy had initially been submitted two years ago. UNICEF Pakistan played a key role by providing technical expertise to ensure international compliance.
Previously, efforts to launch such a policy had stalled due to political and institutional barriers. However, the current leadership has brought renewed focus, enabling its successful approval.
The Punjab government plans to initiate district-level implementation and awareness drives, with social experts praising the move as a critical milestone for children’s safety in the province.
