LAHORE: The Punjab government has relaxed operating-hour restrictions for entertainment venues, allowing Punjab Cinema operations to continue until 11 p.m. under the revised business timing framework.
The decision is expected to provide relief to cinema owners, filmmakers, and audiences across the province. Officials said the updated policy aims to balance economic activity with regulatory controls.
Under the earlier restrictions, many cinemas in Punjab Cinema locations were required to shut down by 8 p.m. This affected evening shows and reduced audience turnout, especially in urban areas.
The issue became more visible in cinemas located inside shopping malls and commercial complexes. These venues faced additional pressure due to early closure rules under provincial austerity measures.
The change follows concerns raised by actor and producer Fahad Mustafa. He urged the provincial government to review the timing restrictions affecting the cinema industry.
He stated that evening shows are important for working audiences and families. Many people are unable to attend daytime screenings due to job schedules and daily commitments.
Mustafa also highlighted that limited screening hours were impacting newly released films. He said opening-week box office performance depends heavily on flexible show timings.
After the policy update, he shared appreciation for the decision and thanked Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for supporting the entertainment sector. The move has been welcomed by stakeholders in Punjab Cinema operations.
According to the revised schedule, shops, markets, malls, and bazaars will now close at 9 p.m. Marriage halls, marquees, and event venues will operate until 10 p.m. However, restaurants, cafes, and Punjab Cinema outlets have been allowed to remain open until 11 p.m.
The policy also includes exemptions for several sectors. These include bakeries, tandoors, fuel stations, CNG stations, gyms, sports facilities, IT companies, and call centers.
Healthcare services such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, laboratories, and medical stores have also been excluded from time restrictions due to their essential nature.
Industry experts believe the extension of Punjab Cinema operating hours will help increase evening footfall. It is also expected to support ticket sales and strengthen employment in the entertainment sector.
