Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a new School Syllabus aimed at improving the quality of education in government schools across the province.
The approval was given during a special meeting on education reforms held in Lahore. The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where officials presented details of the newly prepared curriculum.
The new curriculum has been developed by the Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA), working under the School Education Department.
During the meeting, officials reviewed subjects including English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Urdu, and Early Childhood Education. The updated School Syllabus focuses on reducing academic pressure and improving students’ learning experience.
Officials informed the meeting that the new curriculum will reduce the number of books by 25 percent. The move aims to decrease the burden on students and shift focus away from traditional rote learning methods.
A major feature of the updated curriculum is the addition of QR codes in textbooks. Students will be able to scan these codes and access video lessons related to different topics.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also directed officials to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum for students from Grade 1 to Grade 12. She emphasized the importance of modern technology and digital skills in education.
The chief minister instructed authorities to complete textbook printing before March. She also stressed the need to improve facilities and learning resources in schools.
The meeting decided to introduce mental health training programs for teachers across Punjab for the first time. Officials also agreed on legislation to prevent corporal punishment in schools.
A proposal to appoint visiting psychologists in every district was discussed. The government also reviewed plans to provide online counseling services for students.
The meeting suggested creating “discipline corners” in classrooms as an alternative approach to punishment. Officials agreed to dedicate Saturdays for teacher training across Punjab, with textbook authors also participating in training sessions.
Maryam Nawaz said she wants to establish a strong educational model in Punjab’s government schools. She highlighted the need for AI education, modern laboratories, and better use of available resources.
She said efforts should focus on primary education to build a stronger foundation for students. She also mentioned that English language training for 35,000 teachers across 31 tehsils in 12 districts has been completed.

The Punjab government is also working on improving digital literacy among students. The revised School Syllabus is part of broader education reforms aimed at creating a more modern and student-friendly learning system.
