The ongoing Punjab floods have claimed the lives of 12 people, confirmed Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Thursday. She emphasized that no deaths were due to negligence by the Punjab government or rescue teams.
Speaking to media, Aurangzeb said rescue operations, particularly by boats, are actively underway. Monitoring efforts continue, and six to seven people have already been rescued from debris.
โFood is being provided at relief camps, and nearly 200,000 livestock have been moved to safe locations with their owners,โ Aurangzeb added. She urged citizens to avoid flood-affected areas and refrain from approaching water channels for selfies or photos.
The senior minister praised the tireless work of rescue and administrative teams. Many personnel have been working for three to five days without sleep. She also acknowledged the support of media teams and the presence of elected officials and ministers in the affected areas.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider, conducted an aerial survey of Punjab floods-hit areas. During the visit, the NDMA chief briefed the Prime Minister on rising water levels in Punjabโs rivers and ongoing relief operations in submerged areas.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned of more rain and thundershowers starting Friday, August 29. โRain continues to lash flood-ridden Punjab, with more rain-thundershowers predicted from tomorrow,โ the PMD posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Authorities continue to urge residents to stay vigilant and follow safety instructions. Relief camps are fully operational, and efforts to rescue trapped people and livestock are ongoing.
The Punjab floods have highlighted the urgent need for continued monitoring and quick response to protect lives and property in affected areas.
