Punjab Empowers CCD to Investigate Crimes Against Women and Children

LAHORE: The Punjab cabinet has granted enhanced powers to the Crime Control Department (CCD) to investigate crimes involving women and children. This move aims to strengthen law enforcement and improve protection for vulnerable groups across the province.

According to official sources, the cabinet approved the establishment of a Special Sexual Offences Investigation Unit (SSOIU) within the CCD. The unit will have dedicated officers and all necessary resources to carry out its mandate effectively.

Currently, 263 units across Punjab will operate under the CCD. The department will also be supported by more than 5,000 personnel, ensuring a wide network for timely investigations. This expansion is expected to enhance the speed and quality of inquiries into sensitive cases.

Previously, the SSOIU functioned within the Investigation Wing, handling cases related to women and children under specific investigation directives. With the new approval, the CCD will have full authority to oversee these investigations independently, improving accountability and efficiency.

Officials highlighted that this step is part of Punjabโ€™s broader commitment to safeguarding women and children. By providing specialized units and additional resources, authorities aim to address crimes more systematically and ensure justice for victims.

The move has been welcomed by legal experts and civil society representatives, who say that dedicated investigation units can significantly reduce delays in handling sensitive cases. They also emphasized the importance of proper training and monitoring of officers to maintain high standards of investigation.

The CCDโ€™s enhanced powers are expected to strengthen law enforcement across Punjab, making it easier to respond promptly to crimes against women and children. The establishment of SSOIU marks a significant step toward improving safety, protection, and justice for vulnerable populations in the province.
