Punjab Implements Major Reforms in Women's Universities to Protect Female Students

The Punjab government has decided to remove all male professors and teachers from women’s universities across the province. This decision aims to prevent harassment and safeguard female students, marking a significant shift in the education sector. Governor Sardar Saleem Haider announced this step while addressing the media, assuring that strict punishments would be enforced against anyone found guilty of harassment at educational institutions.

Along with the removal of male staff, the governor also revealed that the entire system for preparing and checking examination papers will be revamped to prevent incidents of blackmail and harassment. He emphasized that university administrations have been instructed to swiftly implement the new system to ensure the protection of female students. A new performance evaluation process for vice-chancellors and professors will be introduced, with future rewards and punishments based on these assessments.

In another educational initiative, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, while launching the Honhaar Scholarship Programme at Government College Women University (GCWU) Sialkot, announced scholarships for the top 10 students. She also confirmed that students with over 65% marks would receive laptops under a broader scheme to support education. A guard of honour was presented to the top students, with further scholarships being distributed across the Gujranwala division.

The chief minister assured that the Punjab government would also take full responsibility for the cancer treatment of a female student’s mother. Additionally, she pledged to increase the number of Honhaar scholarships to 50,000 in the next year’s budget, expanding opportunities for students across the province.
