The Punjab Home Department has imposed section 144 across the province to strengthen security and maintain law and order during Muharram-ul-Haram.
According to an official notification, the restrictions will remain in place from 1st Muharram to 10th Muharram, corresponding to June 17 to June 26. Authorities said the measures are necessary to ensure peaceful religious activities throughout the province.
Under section 144, seven categories of restrictions will be enforced in all districts. The decision aims to prevent security threats and avoid any incidents that could disrupt public order.
Officials stated that only officially approved processions and religious gatherings will be allowed. No new traditions, events, or unauthorized activities can be introduced during this period.
The government has also banned the display and carrying of weapons and inflammable materials in public spaces without prior approval from the relevant authorities.
Under section 144, authorities have prohibited provocative speeches, slogans, gestures, and statements that may create sectarian or religious tensions. The distribution of material promoting hatred based on sectarian or ethnic differences has also been banned.
Special security arrangements will be implemented along procession routes. People will not be allowed to collect stones, bricks, bottles, or any objects that could pose security risks.
Authorities have also restricted access to rooftops and buildings located near procession routes. Spectators will not be allowed to gather on rooftops or shop platforms during processions.
In addition, the Punjab government has announced a ban on pillion riding on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. However, senior citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel will be exempt from this restriction.
Officials said section 144 is a preventive measure that is implemented every year to ensure public safety during important religious occasions.
The Home Department has directed all district administrations and law enforcement agencies to ensure strict implementation of the rules. Authorities have also been instructed to create public awareness regarding the restrictions.
Citizens have been urged to cooperate with security officials and follow all guidelines during Muharram. Officials believe that public cooperation will help maintain peace and allow religious activities to continue without disruption.
The provincial government emphasized that these measures are temporary and solely focused on ensuring safety during Muharram-ul-Haram.
