LAHORE: The Punjab Local Government Department has introduced new Rules For Nikah registrars. The changes aim to prevent underage marriages and improve marriage registration.
Under the revised requirements, nikah registrars must follow their assigned jurisdictions. They can only register marriages conducted within their designated areas.
Registrars will not be allowed to register a nikah performed outside their jurisdiction. The restriction is intended to improve monitoring and record keeping.
The department has also introduced new qualification requirements for nikah registrar appointments. Applicants must pass the relevant examination to become eligible.
Candidates will need to secure at least 90 percent marks in the examination. Those who fail to meet the required score will not qualify for appointment.
Digital Skills Made Mandatory
The Punjab government has also included basic digital skills in the new requirements. Nikah registrars must be able to use the internet and mobile phones.
Applicants must also understand how to operate the required digital system. Those unable to use these tools will not be considered for the position.
The digital requirement is aimed at improving the registration process. It can also help authorities maintain marriage records more efficiently.
Seven-Day Registration Deadline
The revised Rules For Nikah also introduce a fixed deadline for marriage registration. Registrars must complete the registration within seven days of the nikah.
After completing the registration, the record must be submitted to the concerned Union Council. This requirement is expected to support timely and organized record keeping.
The department has also imposed restrictions based on criminal records. A person facing a registered criminal case cannot become a nikah registrar.
This condition applies to individuals seeking appointment under the revised requirements. It is intended to ensure greater accountability among marriage registration officials.
Focus on Preventing Underage Marriages
The changes come as part of efforts to strengthen the marriage registration system. Authorities also aim to prevent practices that can enable underage marriages.
Limiting registrars to their assigned jurisdictions can improve oversight. It can also make it easier for authorities to verify marriage records.
The examination requirement sets a higher standard for new registrars. Meanwhile, digital skills are expected to support more efficient registration procedures.
The Rules For Nikah also place responsibility on registrars to complete registrations promptly. They must ensure records reach the relevant Union Council within the specified period.
The new requirements will apply to people seeking appointment as nikah registrars. Existing registrars will also need to follow the applicable registration procedures.
