Punjab Launches Cyber Patrol Cell to Curb Online Hate During Muharram

To promote religious harmony during Muharram, the Punjab Home Department has established the province’s first Cyber Patrol and Quick Response Cell for real-time digital monitoring and rapid action against provocative online content.

The cell, operating under direct supervision of the Home Department, is responsible for identifying and reporting sectarian or objectionable posts on social media. Authorities say the move is aimed at curbing the spread of hate speech, misinformation, and incitement during the sensitive religious period.

In an official statement issued Monday, a spokesperson confirmed the Cyber Patrol Cell has already begun scanning digital platforms for fake news and content promoting religious animosity. Flagged material is being referred to the Special Branch for verification and further steps.

The department is also coordinating with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Ministry of Interior to ensure rapid blocking of harmful content and to initiate legal action against individuals behind such posts. The Special Branch has been tasked with content takedowns and tracing the sources of digital incitement.
