Punjab Launches Digital Media Cell to Monitor Hate Content During Muharram

LAHORE: The Punjab government has taken a major step to strengthen security during Muharram-ul-Haram. Under this new initiative, Punjab Launches a dedicated Digital Media Cell in the Home Department to monitor online activities.

The move is aimed at controlling the spread of sectarian, violent, and hate-related content on social media. Officials said the step is part of broader security arrangements to maintain peace across the province.

The newly established Digital Media Cell will work round the clock. It will track objectionable content and ensure quick reporting for legal action. Through this initiative, Punjab Launches stronger cyber patrolling to prevent religious hatred and provocative material online.

The Chief Secretary Punjab visited the facility and reviewed its live cyber monitoring system. During the visit, he stressed that peace during Muharram is a shared national duty. He directed authorities to act immediately against those spreading harmful content.

He said there should be no delay in taking legal action against individuals or accounts trying to create sectarian tension. Officials believe this system will help stop the spread of hate speech before it causes unrest.

Secretary Home Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi briefed the Chief Secretary on the provinceโ€™s overall security arrangements. He shared that Punjab has organized security for 37,868 Majalis and 9,412 processions during Muharram.

To maintain law and order, over 125,000 police officers have been deployed across the province. Alongside them, 61 companies of the Pakistan Army and 76 companies of Rangers are also on duty.

Authorities have also reported over 16,000 objectionable social media accounts to the PTA for blocking. These accounts were linked to sectarian hatred and public disorder.

As part of preventive action, movement restrictions have been placed on 1,418 individuals identified as provocative speakers. Speaking bans have also been imposed on 794 others.

Officials said Punjab Launches this digital monitoring system to ensure peace, protect public safety, and promote harmony during Muharram. Citizens have also been urged to report hateful content through dedicated WhatsApp helplines for immediate action.
