LAHORE: The Punjab Police has decided to reorganize its Internal Accountability Branch (IAB).
The move follows Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision for stronger accountability within the police department.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Abdul Kareem chaired a meeting on Saturday. Senior police officials attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed several proposals concerning the future role of the IAB. Officials discussed ways to strengthen internal accountability and address corruption.
The IAB will now play a more central role in handling corruption-related matters. The branch will also receive direct intelligence support from the Special Branch.
The IGP said the new system would improve oversight within the department. It will also ensure that complaints are reviewed at higher levels.
Daily Review of Complaints
Under the new arrangement, a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) will review complaints daily. The review will focus on complaints against senior police officers.
Regional Superintendents of Police (SPs) will handle inquiries against Sub-Inspectors and higher-ranking personnel. This will bring the inquiry process under senior-level supervision.
The Punjab Police has also decided to change how inquiries are transferred. Complaints will no longer be sent to the relevant districts or regions.
The decision is aimed at creating a more centralized accountability system. It may also help ensure greater consistency in handling complaints.
Old Complaints to Be Reopened
Officials also discussed complaints that were previously closed without proper follow-up.
Such complaints will now be reopened for further review. Authorities will examine whether additional action is required in these cases.
Investigation-related complaints will also receive greater attention under the revised system. These matters will be assigned at the SP level for further action.
The changes are expected to strengthen internal monitoring across the police department. They will also provide senior officers with greater oversight of complaint proceedings.
The Punjab Police will implement the revised accountability mechanism following the directions discussed during the meeting.
The reorganization is part of broader efforts to improve transparency and discipline within the department. The Punjab police leadership aims to ensure complaints receive proper scrutiny.
