More than 70,000 dog-bite cases have been reported across Punjab during the current year.

According to the Punjab Health Department, the province has recorded 70,586 cases so far in 2026.

Lahore accounts for a significant share of the reported incidents. The city has recorded 30,514 cases during the year.

Health department sources said four people have also died from rabies in Punjab this year.

Rabies is a serious viral infection that can develop after exposure to an infected animal.

Health officials have raised concerns over the continuing number of cases across the province.

Punjab is currently recording an average of around 400 dog-bite incidents each day, according to the available figures.

The province had reported 243,299 cases during 2025.

Meanwhile, 38,586 incidents were recorded during the first three months of 2026.

Punjab Takes Measures to Control Stray Dogs

The Punjab government has introduced several measures to control the stray dog population.

One of these measures is the Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate and Release programme, commonly known as CNVR.

The programme aims to reduce uncontrolled breeding while vaccinating stray dogs against diseases, including rabies.

Municipal authorities have also conducted campaigns targeting stray dogs in areas considered high risk.

Public awareness campaigns have been launched to educate residents about rabies prevention and timely medical treatment.

Authorities have also been directed to improve waste management across the province.

Open garbage can attract stray animals and provide them with easily available food sources.

Better waste management is therefore considered an important part of controlling stray dog populations.

Some residents, however, have raised concerns about the implementation of these measures in their areas.

Treatment Available for Dog-Bite Victims

Healthcare facilities across Punjab provide medical treatment for people affected by dog-bite incidents.

Available services include anti-rabies vaccination, post-exposure prophylaxis and emergency wound treatment.

Health experts advise victims to seek medical assistance immediately after being bitten or scratched by a suspected rabid animal.

Timely treatment is important because rabies can be prevented after exposure when appropriate medical care is provided promptly.

The rising number of dog-bite cases has increased attention on prevention, vaccination and stray animal management.
