Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has launched a major City Project expansion. This new phase will add 10,000 cameras. These cameras will cover 98 tehsils across Punjab.
The City Project will cost Rs. 16 billion. This expansion moves beyond major cities. It now reaches tehsil-level areas too.
Current Safe City Coverage
The existing system operates in 40 Punjab cities. Thousands of HD cameras already monitor public places. Roads, markets and highways fall under this coverage.
Officials say the system already shows strong results. Serious crime dropped by nearly 70 percent. This decline occurred in covered Safe City areas.
Expansion Plans Across Punjab
The new City Project will eventually reach 7,602 union councils. This makes it one of the region’s largest policing networks. Technology plays a central role in this expansion.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the expansion plan. This decision followed several digital governance initiatives. She also visited China in August 2026 for related discussions.
Her visit focused on technology transfer and artificial intelligence. Officials later held meetings on rural technology adoption. These discussions shaped the current City Project expansion.
Recent Safe City Impact
Officials highlighted a key data point recently. On September 20, no robbery-related emergency call came in. This applied to all 39 districts under Safe City coverage.
Authorities credit better coordination for this success. PSCA works closely with Crime Control Department teams. District police also play an important coordination role.
How the System Works
Safe City centres provide real-time video monitoring. They also offer digital evidence for investigations. Currently, 43 smart centres operate across Punjab.
These centres use video analytics daily. They track suspicious activity and crime patterns. This helps police respond to incidents faster.
Advanced Technology Features
The system includes artificial intelligence-based tools. These include facial recognition and number plate recognition. Smart traffic management is also part of this technology.
These tools help trace stolen vehicles quickly. They also identify high-crime areas effectively. Currently, over 24,000 HD cameras operate provincewide.
Future of the Safe Punjab Initiative
The government plans further technology-based policing expansion. This falls under the broader Safe Punjab initiative. The current City Project remains a key part of this vision.
