The Punjab government has announced a new initiative to promote the mother tongue and regional languages in all government schools across the province.
Officials said the program will focus on spoken Punjabi and Punjabi literature, ensuring students learn polite and courteous words like โTusiโ and โAssi,โ while avoiding informal or inappropriate language.
The initiative also celebrates regional diversity. Schools in southern Punjab will receive support for Saraiki, while those in northern Punjab will focus on Pothohari. Headteachers are tasked with organizing activities and creating videos showing students speaking Punjabi or their local mother tongue.
Punjabi, spoken by millions across the province, serves as a major cultural and social connector. By teaching it formally in schools, students can develop pride in their roots, improve literacy, and express themselves confidently in their mother tongue.
Officials emphasized that learning the mother tongue at school helps preserve literature, folklore, and cultural identity. Students will also gain confidence and pride in their heritage while strengthening communication skills.
All recorded clips will be shared in official CEO groups, and school heads must submit reports detailing program implementation. Authorities hope this step will enhance cultural awareness and linguistic skills among students.
The initiative is expected to foster appreciation for Punjabโs diverse languages and encourage students to use their mother tongue in everyday communication, promoting both heritage and education.
Experts said that teaching children in their native language improves learning outcomes, boosts self-esteem, and ensures that traditions and local culture are passed on to future generations.
The Punjab governmentโs program is being hailed as a major effort to strengthen cultural roots, preserve regional literature, and instill pride in the provinceโs rich linguistic heritage.
