LAHORE β The Punjab government has started the process of purchasing Electric Vehicles for its officials as part of its shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly transport.
Officials from the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) inspected different models of Electric Vehicles on Wednesday. Proton Saga presented its model, which was reviewed by Additional Secretary Transport Zahid Manzoor.
A government spokesperson confirmed that procurement for officers will be finalized soon. The move aims to reduce fuel costs, cut emissions, and encourage green mobility across the province.
Earlier, Punjab launched an innovative E-Taxi Pilot Project in Lahore to introduce 1,100 electric taxis into the cityβs transport system. The plan includes 1,000 e-taxis for fleet owners, with each required to purchase at least 10 vehicles. Another 100 electric taxis will be allocated to individuals registered with Transport Network Companies (TNCs). Out of these, 70 will go to men and 30 to women.
Affordable Financing Options
To make electric taxis more accessible, the government has offered attractive financing. Buyers can avail interest-free loans for five years, with applicants paying 30% equity upfront. The Punjab government will contribute between 30% and 60% of the remaining cost depending on fleet size and applicant category.
Additionally, registration fees for these vehicles will be waived. Each taxi will feature safety equipment such as trackers and panic buttons. Designs will follow official branding standards to maintain a uniform look.
Battery and motor warranties will cover up to 300,000 kilometers or six years, whichever comes first. The project has also set a financing limit of Rs6.5 million per vehicle. If the cost exceeds this amount, the buyer will pay the difference.
The Punjab governmentβs shift to Electric Vehicles reflects its commitment to cleaner air, modern infrastructure, and long-term economic benefits.
