LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced plans to provide more than 125,000 e-bikes to talented male and female students.
The initiative is part of the “CM Maryam Nawaz E-Bike Scheme.” A special meeting reviewed progress on the scheme under Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
During the meeting, the chief minister rejected proposals for a down payment from students. She also refused any additional charges apart from the monthly instalment.
The Punjab government will cover the interest and insurance costs for the e-bikes. The monthly instalment has been approved in principle at around Rs3,000.
Maryam Nawaz also approved expanding the scheme in phases. The expanded programme could include government employees, departments and public delivery riders.
The chief minister directed officials to open the e-bike portal this week. She also ordered arrangements for delivery to eligible students within six weeks.
According to the briefing, students will receive safety equipment with their bikes. Helmets and safety rods will be provided free of cost.
The electric bikes will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The technology is designed for electric mobility and regular daily use.
The Punjab government will also arrange free riding training for applicants. Selected students will receive two days of e-bike riding training.
Maryam Nawaz said applications would open on Friday for students across Punjab. She said applicants could apply with zero down payment.
The monthly instalment will be around Rs3,000 under the proposed scheme. The initiative aims to make daily travel more affordable for students.
The Chief Minister’s Office said students from government and private institutions could apply. This will provide students across Punjab with an opportunity to benefit.
Maryam Nawaz described the e-bikes as sporty, stylish and practical. She said they could make everyday travel easier for students.
The scheme is also expected to help students reduce fuel expenses. It could lower the financial burden of daily commuting for young people.
The chief minister also highlighted student independence and mobility. She said the programme aims to empower students through easier transportation.
The government has planned different bike colours for male and female students. Black bikes will be provided for boys, while pink bikes will be offered to girls.
