LAHORE: The Punjab government has ordered action against marriage halls operating without suction hoods.

The decision was announced on Sunday by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Officials said non-compliant businesses will face strict action.

EPA Director General Abdullah Nayyer Sheikh directed field officers to enforce the government orders. The instructions cover marriage halls that have not installed required suction hoods.

The action follows the expiry of a deadline for installing suction hoods. The original deadline ended on January 31.

Authorities had provided additional time for businesses to meet the requirements. The EPA said a nine-month grace period was also allowed.

Officials have now decided to take action against businesses that remain non-compliant. The department said no further concessions will be provided.

Under the new enforcement measures, marriage hall operators without suction hoods can face sealing. The EPA said such premises will be shut down.

The affected businesses may also receive heavy financial penalties. Officials said the measures are part of efforts to control pollution.

The EPA has adopted a zero-tolerance approach toward smoke emissions. The policy also covers other harmful emissions from commercial kitchens.

Suction hoods are designed to control smoke and fumes produced during cooking. Their use can help reduce the release of pollutants into surrounding areas.

The EPA said commercial establishments must follow environmental requirements. Businesses that fail to meet the standards could face enforcement action.

The latest decision also applies to other establishments with similar violations. Officials said enforcement teams will continue inspections across the province.

According to the EPA, more than 500 restaurants have already been sealed. The action was taken over violations involving suction hood requirements.

The department said the enforcement campaign will continue. Field officers have been instructed to identify businesses that have not complied.

Authorities have stressed that businesses must complete the required installations. Operators are expected to meet environmental standards within the given requirements.
