The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued new directives as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle the escalating smog crisis in Punjab.
During a hearing presided over by Justice Shahid Karim, the court ordered all markets in the province to close by 8 PM, with complete shutdowns on Sundays. Highlighting the role of smoke-emitting vehicles and heavy trucks in worsening air pollution, the court imposed a ban on such vehicles on motorways and ring roads. Additionally, it instructed the provincial administration to limit the entry of heavy trucks and trawlers into Lahore.

To ensure compliance, the court directed the deployment of Dolphin Force and other police units to manage traffic. Justice Karim also criticized the Transport Department for allowing unfit vehicles to operate and suggested imposing a fine of Rs. 50,000 on buses violating pollution standards.
The court emphasized that its measures aim to support government efforts in reducing smog. Justice Karim urged deputy commissioners and commissioners to personally oversee the implementation of these orders and called for stricter monitoring at night.
The court also noted that while the one-dish policy at weddings was enforced, similar steps were lacking in controlling large gatherings. It has sought progress reports from various government departments as hearings on the petitions against smog, including those filed by Haroon Farooq, continue.
