Punjab’s first Modern Film City is scheduled to open on December 15, following the completion of preparations. The project aims to revive Pakistan’s film industry and strengthen Lahore’s position as the country’s cinematic centre.
The announcement came during the first meeting of the Punjab Film Authority on Sunday. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb chaired the meeting, which approved several measures to support filmmaking and local artists.
The initiative focuses on modern production facilities, financial support, and better opportunities for filmmakers. It also aims to promote Punjab’s cultural heritage through cinema and screen tourism.
Punjab Approves First Royalty Law for Artists
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the preparation of Pakistan’s first royalty law for artists. She directed officials to present the proposed legislation at the next Film Authority meeting.
The law aims to establish a formal framework for artists’ royalty rights. This development could provide stronger protection for creative professionals working in Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
The meeting also approved plans for a film and music school. Additional projects include a film trading house, a post-production facility, and a studio complex with modern soundstages.
Punjab will also establish Pakistan’s largest convention centre as part of its broader development plans. These facilities are expected to support different stages of film production.
The Modern Film City was first announced by Maryam Nawaz in April. The project is planned as an integrated media production hub in Lahore.
Film Rebate Policy and Online Platform
Marriyum Aurangzeb directed officials to present a film rebate framework at the next meeting. The proposed policy will provide financial support to filmmakers and encourage better production standards.
A single-window online platform will also be introduced for filmmakers. It will help users find suitable locations for shooting projects across the province.
The platform is expected to simplify location selection and improve coordination. These measures aim to make Punjab more attractive to local and international production teams.
Budget and Recruitment Plans
A proposed budget of Rs. 589 million for the Film City Authority has been sent to the finance committee for review.
The authority has also approved the recruitment of 26 employees in the first phase. These appointments will be made against 53 vacant positions.
The board will have the authority to make hiring and dismissal decisions within the organisation. Officials also reviewed progress on establishing the Punjab Film Fund Committee.
Six specialised subcommittees are also planned to support the authority’s work. These bodies will help manage different aspects of the film development initiative.
Old Cinemas to Receive Modern Upgrades
The meeting approved plans to restore old cinema halls across Punjab. The proposed upgrades include solar power systems and online ticketing facilities.
Training programmes for young filmmakers will also be introduced. International experts are expected to conduct these sessions to improve local filmmaking skills.
The plans follow the provincial government’s earlier proposal for a one-dollar cinema project. Together, these initiatives aim to improve cinema access and encourage greater public interest in films.
Marriyum Aurangzeb said Maryam Nawaz wants Punjab to become an international screen tourism hub within five years. The initiative will also highlight the province’s culture and heritage for global audiences.
