Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Asad Umar on Friday called for political Dialogue to restore stability. They urged both the government and opposition to renew the Charter of Democracy.
The two former federal ministers were presented before an Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore. Their appearance followed a request by their legal teams. The cases relate to the May 9 unrest.
The court extended their interim bail until February 13. During the hearing, both leaders briefly discussed the country’s political situation. They also spoke informally with journalists outside the courtroom.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi said political engagement was essential for national stability. He stressed that Dialogue between rival political forces was the only way forward. He warned that continued political deadlock could harm the economy.
Qureshi also spoke about regional tensions. He said Pakistan responded strongly during the recent escalation with India. However, he cautioned that New Delhi might not step back and could act again.
He added that global conditions were worsening due to rising tensions between the United States and Iran. According to him, these developments place Pakistan in a vulnerable position.
Qureshi also shared a personal loss. He said his brother-in-law had passed away recently. Despite requesting parole, he was not allowed to attend the funeral.
Asad Umar also addressed the media. He said PTI supporters believe in peaceful and democratic politics. He rejected any suggestion of violent methods.
Umar said the country would eventually need Dialogue to move ahead. He stressed that democracy remained Pakistan’s only solution.
He said the Pakistan Peoples Party showed political maturity. However, he criticised the ruling PML-N. He claimed the party lacked genuine public support.
Umar added that any talks with the government must remain transparent. He said negotiations should not be seen as a deal or compromise.
He also commented on the Iran situation. Umar said Pakistan played a positive role during rising regional tensions.
Separately, Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Moin Riaz Qureshi met Shah Mahmood Qureshi in court. They discussed the broader political environment.
