Rare ‘Blue Moon’ Lights Up Skies Across Pakistan

Rare ‘Blue Moon’ Lights Up Skies Across Pakistan

Citizens across Pakistan witnessed a rare celestial event on Sunday night as the sky lit up with a stunning Blue Moon. Clear weather conditions allowed people in multiple cities to enjoy a bright and detailed view of the full moon.

The Blue Moon was visible in major cities including Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Faisalabad, and Multan. Astronomy enthusiasts and photographers captured the moment, sharing images widely on social media. Families also gathered outdoors to observe the rare sight.

According to experts, the Blue Moon occurs when two full moons appear in a single calendar month. Astronomers say this is a rare phenomenon that usually happens once every two to three years. In May 2026, the first full moon appeared on May 1, while the second was seen on May 31.

Astronomers also clarified that the term Blue Moon does not refer to the color of the moon. Instead, it is a scientific term used in astronomy. The event is based on lunar cycles rather than visual appearance.

Professor Dr. Syed Aamir Mehmood from the Department of Space Science at Punjab University explained that this Blue Moon was also a “Micro Moon.” He said this means the moon was slightly farther from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it appeared smaller and less bright than usual.

Despite this, the Blue Moon remained clearly visible in many regions of Pakistan. The best view was recorded around 7:30 pm when the moon rose on the eastern horizon. It remained visible throughout the night in several cities due to clear skies.

Experts also explained other lunar terms used in astronomy. A “Super Moon” appears larger and brighter when closer to Earth. A “Blood Moon” occurs during a total lunar eclipse, giving the moon a reddish shade. Traditional names like “Harvest Moon” and “Strawberry Moon” are also used for seasonal full moons.

The rare Blue Moon event sparked excitement among sky watchers across the country. Many people described it as a peaceful and memorable experience, making Sunday night a special moment for astronomy lovers in Pakistan.
