RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi divisional administration has directed officials to complete two underpasses on Peshawar Road by November 2026. Construction work on both projects has reached approximately 60% completion.

The projects are estimated to cost Rs. 8 billion. They aim to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along one of Rawalpindi’s major roads.

Commissioner Rawalpindi Salman Ghani issued the directions during a visit to both construction sites. He inspected the ongoing work at Race Course Chowk and Charing Cross.

During the visit, the commissioner reviewed the progress and discussed the remaining construction activities. He instructed the Communication and Works Department to maintain the current pace of work. He also stressed the importance of completing the projects without compromising construction quality.

Construction Work Progresses on Both Underpasses

The superintending engineer of Highway Circle No. 1 briefed the commissioner about the project’s progress. He reported that several major structural activities had already been completed.

These included piling, deck slabs, and capping beams. Construction teams are now focusing on additional infrastructure and road development.

The remaining work includes installing barriers, excavation, and relocating utility services. Workers are also developing drainage systems and improving road sections around the construction sites.

Authorities are expected to complete the remaining activities before the November 2026 deadline. The administration has emphasised timely completion to minimise inconvenience for commuters.

Race Course and Charing Cross Underpasses

The two underpasses will have different traffic arrangements to support movement in both directions.

The Race Course Underpass will provide two lanes for northbound traffic. It will also include three-level road lanes to improve vehicle movement and turning options.

Meanwhile, the Charing Cross Underpass will facilitate southbound traffic. It will feature two underpass lanes and two-level road lanes.

These arrangements are designed to improve traffic circulation at the two busy intersections. The projects are expected to provide smoother movement for motorists travelling along Peshawar Road.

In addition to the underpasses, authorities are rehabilitating and widening the road between Bungalow No. 276 and Raffay Mall. This work forms part of the wider effort to improve road infrastructure in the area.

Utility Relocation and Traffic Management

The administration is also shifting utility services underground. This measure aims to reduce roadside obstructions and improve traffic flow.

Commissioner Salman Ghani directed officials to maintain effective traffic management throughout construction. He also instructed them to provide alternative routes for commuters where necessary.

Furthermore, authorities have been asked to implement anti-smog measures at the construction sites. These measures aim to control dust and reduce air pollution caused by ongoing construction activities.

The administration’s instructions highlight the need to balance construction progress with public convenience. Proper traffic arrangements will remain important while work continues on both sites.

Once completed, the two underpasses are expected to improve traffic movement along Peshawar Road. Their completion will also add to Rawalpindi’s road infrastructure.
