Rehan Tariq Sent on Six-Day Remand in NCCIA Case Over Controversial Podcast

Rehan Tariq Sent on Six-Day Remand in NCCIA Case Over Controversial Podcast

Rehan Tariq, a podcast host, has been placed on a six-day physical remand by a Lahore court following his arrest in a case involving allegations of promoting religious hatred through online content. The order allows the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to continue its investigation into the matter.

Rehan Tariq was taken into custody by the NCCIA after arriving in Pakistan from London on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that a case has been registered against him under Sections 11-C, 295-A, and 298 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). The charges relate to online content that allegedly hurt religious sentiments and had the potential to create sectarian tensions.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the case is linked to a podcast featuring religious scholar Syed Jawad Naqvi. The interview received significant attention on social media and sparked widespread public debate.

Investigators claim that Rehan Tariq asked questions during the podcast that focused on highly sensitive sectarian issues. The complainant argued that the nature of these questions, along with their presentation, could encourage conflict among followers of different religious sects and schools of thought.

The FIR further states that an initial review of the content found it to be intentionally uploaded to social media in a manner considered provocative. Investigators allege that the material had the potential to spread sectarian hatred, disturb public peace, and affect social harmony.

During his appearance before the court, Rehan Tariq raised concerns about the way he was presented by the authorities. He told the court that he had been brought in as though he were a highly wanted criminal. He also said he was unaware of the specific allegations filed against him.

After hearing the arguments, the court approved a six-day physical remand. The decision gives the NCCIA additional time to question the accused and collect further evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Before his arrest, Rehan Tariq had issued a public apology on social media regarding the controversial podcast. In his statement, he acknowledged the criticism the interview had received and expressed regret over the public reaction.
