A severe heatwave continues to grip much of the country, with temperatures climbing to dangerously high levels. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Lahore is expected to hit a scorching 42°C today, while cities like Islamabad and Peshawar will also face intense heat, with highs reaching 41°C.
Quetta and Karachi will experience slightly cooler temperatures around 36°C, though certain areas in Karachi could still see temperatures rise to 40°C.

Meanwhile, the PMD forecasts rain in northern and mountainous areas, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and nearby regions, with showers expected this evening and overnight.
The extreme heat has caused a surge in demand for cold drinks nationwide and increased the risk of heat-related health issues. Residents, especially in Punjab, are enduring harsh conditions as the sun beats down relentlessly, even causing road surfaces to soften in some areas.
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave warning, urging people to take necessary safety measures. A spokesperson warned temperatures could spike further by May 19, potentially intensifying the heatwave in Punjab’s major cities and plains.
Currently, Lahore is experiencing temperatures well above average, with lows around 28°C and highs expected to reach 43°C. The PMD predicts these hot and dry conditions will continue for the next two to three days, with no rain expected in the plains.
Health authorities advise the public to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and cold fluids, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and wear protective clothing such as hats. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with existing health problems, are especially urged to take precautions against heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.
