Searing Temperatures Turn Eid Celebrations Indoors in South Punjab

A blistering heatwave engulfed South Punjab during the Eid holidays, with mercury levels soaring to 45°C and transforming what is typically a vibrant festive period into a subdued indoor affair. Public spaces that normally buzz with activity stood deserted as residents sought refuge from the oppressive heat.

The extreme weather forced families to abandon traditional outdoor gatherings and festivities. “Stepping outside feels like walking into an oven – we’ve barely left the house,” lamented Salman Amjad, a local resident. Meteorological officials confirmed the heatwave would persist until at least June 12, dashing hopes of cooler relief during the holiday period.

For many returning to their hometowns for Eid, celebrations were confined to indoor spaces. “Between the scorching temperatures and heavy Eid meals, going outside seemed unbearable,” explained Asim from Nawabpur. Health professionals like Dr. Waqas Arqam warned of increased health risks, particularly dehydration, urging the public to limit sun exposure and maintain proper hydration.

The dramatic drop in outdoor activity was evident across the region, with parks, recreational areas, and popular gathering spots remaining unusually quiet throughout the three-day holiday. This year’s Eid in South Punjab will be remembered not for its joyous street celebrations, but for the extreme weather that kept families behind closed doors.
